If I'm busy at work he gets busier. If we go out with friends I can't talk too much cuz he's always telling all the jokes and monopolizing the conversation. What gives?

You must be a truly amazing woman. The guy is threatened by you. He feels inferior, publically and privately. He feels he has to compete just keep up. Plain and simple, he's dealing with self-esteem issues.
A man gets his self esteem from two primary areas; career and sex. Everything else is very, very secondary. Which area (probably both) does he feel inadequate? Even a little? Boost him there, and the behavior everywhere else will disappear. He won't need it anymore.

Some people are naturally competitive. They grow up in a family environment where they are constantly competing with each other and this carries over into their married life. Many people don't even realize they are doing this. There is also a smaller group of people that simply do this out of a need to be the center of attention.
