at the beginning of Naruto, fourth hokage died. why did they already have fourth hokage at that time when third hokage was still alive. is that possible they had 2 hokages at that time?

Plane and simple, the 3rd got tired of being the HoKage and since he saw that his first choice, Orochimaru, was corrupt he decided to pick one of Jiraiya's pupils to take his place. Hence the 4th HoKage, and when he died I think it was the councils choice to apoint the 3rd as the replacement. THEN when he died they asked Jiraya to be the 5th HoKage and he turned them down saying that he liked his life how it was and that there were things he still needed to do so he went looking for Tsunade the current and awesome 5th HoKage.

They didn't the could find a fouth before the third died. Originally there were 4 Hokages thress of them died. They wanted to find another cus the third was old and he might not be around forever so they went to find another totake his place after the third died.

I thought the Third wanted to retire, so the Fourth was chosen. After his death, the Third came out of retirement, because there was no one else all the ninjas would listen to.

i think it's because he sacerfice himself to save the village and the people in konoha think he should be a hogake even though the third is alive.
