i have one and its driving the heck out of me and my family

Use a tennis ball and have someone use the palm of their hand to rub the ball against the knot. If you don't have anyone place the ball against a wall and rub the knot against the ball. Also make sure you are taking a good anti-inflamitory like aleve

Oh when your back hurts it affects everything doesn't it? Been there, done that...

If you haven't seen a doctor here are a few things that worked for me:

Aleve, which is an over-the-counter pain reliever,
hot pad,
stretching exercises,
and getting involved in something that requires all of my attention so I don't dwell on it.

yoga. take a class or buy a dvd especially for relaxing the back.
