When an interviewer asks for a referral whose name should I give ... a former co-worker or the person I was reporting to? Should I give the names right away or can I say I'll e-mail the referral info and let the people know I'm giving their names and then send in the info?

if you are going into an interview you should already have that information on hand. Get your referrals straight before you go into an interview, and ask your colleague, friend, or whom ever you choose as your referral for their permission to use them. More or less so if they get a call asking about you they know what is regarding, believe me if a friend gets a call on my phone and I don't know about it the people calling don't know what they are in for. By the way what employers are looking for in referrals are people who have had prior work experience with you so they can give them an idea of what kind of worker you are. In other cases they just want to verify you are who you say you are.

Number #1 YOU are the referral, the how good you are person, the whole shebang when its mono mono. You should have been prepared before ever walking thru the door, which it seems as though you are trying to be, You should have a list from your past employer/employers plus perhaps 1 or 2 people that have an expertise in the job you want. The Biggest point is how to carry yourself [ head high ] and convince the interviewer/Boss in short understandable scenarios showing why you will be an Asset to the company if given the chance. This kind of Honesty is looked highly upon. Good luck
BE PREPARED! if you are not now prepared , what do I see in the future with you as an employee??

When you go to an interview, you should have a list of references, with their contact information, ready to give to the interviewer. And always talk to the references first and ask if you may use them as a reference.
