It depends on how your DSL is set up. Sometimes there's a little converter box that basically takes the ground wires of the phone line and uses that for DSL and then there's the other way where the signal is weaved right into the regular phone line. Either way you need to just plug your fax modem into your phone line the same way you would a regular phone. Then you can send faxes and be on the internet simultaneously (although you won't be able to be on the phone while faxing...)
Just to clarify... Faxes are sent by one fax machine (or computer with a fax modem connected to a phone line) calling another fax machine and transmitting a digital signal which is converted into an image and printed on a page. You do not need any kind of special "account" to send faxes, simply the equipment.

If you have DSL or Cable you cannot use a FAX modem to fax.
You need to have a dial up connection in order to utilize the FAX applications that are available out there.
If you were working for a corporation, there are internal or 3rd party vendors that use the email system in order to fax stuff, but I guess to answer your question, as a home user, with DSL you CANNOT use your computers high speed as a fax, all you need is an installed modem on your computer and access to an analog line.
I mean even though you have DSL you can still dial up with a phone connection
Just for the purpose of faxing..

You have to split your phone line. DSL and analog (voice/fax) phone signals can be used at the same time. One lead of the phone line plugs into your DSL modem and the other into your fax modem. Your provider should have info available on this.

Yes. I do this myself. You need to connect a phone line to your PC modem WITHOUT a filter on it (just buy a splitter and put the filter in one side and run the other straight to your modem), the same way you connect a phone to the jack. That is all there is to it. Then you will be able to send and receive faxes, once you configure your modem and fax program.

hi, (ANS) you won't be able to deliver a fax over a braodband connection!! no one tells you this yet i chanced on out the difficult way. Why? faxing is previous technologies, is amazingly sluggish in evaluation to broadband & ADSL. Faxing calls for an previous formed telephone line, and faxing is sluggish and runs at 33,000kbps. **Faxing is fax gadget to fax gadget, or from a domicile windows laptop which includes XP yet with an previous fax modem (dailup telephone line) connected. So the fax modem can dailup out to a telephone decision which has a fax gadget or fax answering gadget. or maybe yet another laptop with a fax modem, both way faxing calls for a dailup telephone decision you won't be able to do it over braodband itself (convinced! you should use the voice channel of your broadband a twin of an previous telephone line, therefore you should use that area of the broadband to deliver faxes).
