My room mate is a pig. Heats food without covering it, food splatters and ends up as smelly little dried up splotches all over the walls of the microwave. I know I should just go buy a new one, but as long as I have this roommate, why bother as it would just get nasty again. So I need the best answer on how to get the crud off the walls and the odor out. Please help.

Fill a large mug with water. Put a slice or two of lemon in it. Put it in the microwave on high for 2 minutes.

The steam will soften the old crusty splatters, and the lemon will help with the old food odors. Wipe with a sponge and mild detergent. If there's any splatters left, repeat the steaming process, it's much easier than scrubbing away in such an enclosed space.

Once you get it cleaned, steam it once a week to keep the crud from building up too bad.

Good luck!!

Here's about 24 tips from users at eHow.com on how to clean the microwave out -- most are a variation of the "nuke the water to soften the crud" scenario, with different additives. Check out page 2 for things *NOT* to do!! (1st link below)

I heat a small bowl of lemon juice to boiling inside the microwave. The steam will loosen all of the junk accumulated on the walls and ceiling. You can just wipe if off with a sponge or paper towel. Lemon leaves the inside smelling nice, too.

You should microwave a cup of water for 1-2 minutes. The steam will help loosen things up a bit. Some of the stuff should be able to wipe off with a moist paper towel. For the really tough stuff, get some steel wool and detergent. The detergent will help break up the grease, and the steel wool should be able to scrape everything else off.

I've done this one and it works very well!

22. Dishcloth eHow Friend
After I am finished washing my dishes, I use my unsqueezed dishcloth and put it in the microwave for 2-5 minutes. I watch it until the glass is fogged. Then I turn my microwave off and let it sit for about 3 minutes and then wipe it clean.

Sorry I have messy kids & found only elbow grease works. However, I do get the stuff wet with my dishrag first to let it soften for a few minutes and then I use a scratcher. Good Luck!
