First, whenever you download anything from Yahoo!, always save the install file by another name (the install program ususally deletes it). This way, you can reinstall if you have a problem.
Find the install file from the OLD version of Yahoo!
Remove the new version (control panels --> Add/Remove Programs).
Reboot your machine.
Add in the "old" level of messenger you previously had (you can find this on Yahoo!, but you have to look hard.)
Finally, never EVER download the 'beta' version (especially if you don't have the install file saved of the previous version). I use Messenger 7.0 -- I've heard the next two steps up have real problems.

Is your firewall interfering? You may have to turn it off before you can use your messenger.

i also have this problem too. I JUST FOUND OUT YESTERDAY WHILE I WAS TRYING TO GET MY CHAT ON SO LET ME KNOW THE ANSWER.
