Tetra-ethyl lead is the all-time best in terms of octane boost per gram added to a gallon of gas.

But it is no longer available, except within 100-LL (100 octane low-lead) aviation gasoline.

Benzene the other aromatic-ring compounds (toluene, ethyl benzene, xylene) help and were added to be about 15-20% of gasoline in the 1980s. Then they got reduced due to their carcinogenic properties.

Ethanol helps. Adding more than 15% starts reducing fuel efficiency (because ethanol has less heat content per gallon than dino-gasoline). And any time you use ethanol, it can attract water to the fuel tank.
