I just recently divorced also, the cost only comes into play if you have a disagreement over property, and if you have childern, but not always.

When I got divoces it was consentual she wanted it and I gave it no question, it took a year because of the kids, but the cost was just for court fees, which you have to pay when you file. You can get the documents online to file you both sign and get notary then file. Depending on kids or not, you could be divorce in 3 months.

To get married all you need is to purchase a piece of paper and pay the justice or pastor. To get divorced you have to include his lawyer, your lawyer, court fees, investigation fees, you name it. Anything that involves the legal system will be very expensive. I suggest you call your nearest family services office and ask for help. They may be able to help you find someone willing to donate time and get this done.

There are ways to make divorce much less expensive. They vary by state and by your commitment to finding those resources. The best place to start looking for information is a women's shelter. You don't have to go stay there and you don't have to pay. All you have to do is let them give you some very useful information.
