...I would like to call my first son Samson, but my surname is Newson, and Samson Newson doesn't really work. I also like the name Jacob, but don't like the name Jake. I like the name Jeremiah but not Jeremy, and I like Eziekiel but not Ziek, Zacharius but not Zach...etc

As you can see, I wuld like to use a biblical name but an uncommon one and not one that can be shortened to something less pleasent.

Any suggestions?

(Not expecting so there's no rush!!! Just interested to see what people think.)

I should point out my fiancee will probably get most of the say, if she's taking my surname I guess it's only fair.

Also, both of us liking the idea of biblical names, and being from christian families, the folowing names have been taken.

Joseph,
Samuel,
Timothy,
Ruth,
Ruben,
Jude,
Isaac,
Noah,
Rebecca,
John,
Nathan,
i'm sure there's more.

I also like Obadiah but I know the Mrs won't have that one!

Think Elijah is a really good one too.

The best way to insure that your child isn't nicknamed is to never use a nickname yourself. My husband was called Jeremiah from the beginning and always introduced that way.

He had some college friends that called him "Jay" and a professor that mistakenly called him "Jeremy" but those are things you can't avoid. People will give you a nickname even if your mom named you "Jack!"

But it really does help to always use the full name.

Some good biblical names that are unique but no so long are:
1. Nathan
2. Caleb
3. Raphael
4. Matthias
5. Joel
6. Ephraim or Ephram
7. Isaiah
8. Elijah or Eli
9. Levi
10. Jared

Have fun brainstorming!

You can call a child whatever you want. If you don't want the nicknamed version of a name, then don't let people start out calling the baby that. If you name a baby Jacob, then call him that. People will get the idea.

Also, some Biblical names that can't be shortened are Noah, Issac, Mark, John, Ezra, Isaiah, Roman or Jude. There's others but these are the ones I think are cool.

I don't know if this will help, but I like the names Jacob, Jeremiah and Ezekial. It is very possible to name the baby these names and make it clear that you do not want them shortened. We do that in my family. No one shortens any baby's name. I am not sure what will happen as the babies and children get older and go to high school or college. I guess they may choose to shorten them then, but for now, my 11 year old and 7 month old use their full given first name. If you are still worried, how about trying this web site:

You set the tone for the "nickname" being used. If you don't use one, the child won't get used to one. I have many students that go by their full name and will correct others if they try to change it. I understand Samson Newson sounds a bit off, but the other names are beautiful!

If you chose the name Samson then chose a 3 syllabic middle name and it will work out ie; Samson Jeremiah Newsom ...see? and then u don't run the risk of someone cutting one of the others names short. BTW this all depends on whether the mother has any say right?

You may fear the short version of the name, but as long as you call your child by their full name, others will follow. I have taught children with long names and everyone just follows what the parents do. I like the idea of biblical names. Cool.

It does not matter if you pick a name that has a nickname that you like. Your child will be given a new nickname that you may not like by his friends. Nicknames that can always be given that have nothing to do with the orginal name given. My bro's name is David and we call him boy-o.

My girls names are Katrina, Athena, and Gabriella and they have always been called by their given names. If you try and shorten it, they wont answer, and if you insist they will politely corretc you and tell you they will only answer to their real name, so name your son whatever you want, and what you call him will be his name. PS my sisters' name is Jessika and she has never been called Jess,Jessie ect,

I don't have any ideas. Whatever you name your child there will be a shortened name for it or there will be a nickname. Doesn't mean you have to call him/her by it.

If you like these names use them. For instance if you like Jeremiah call him that and correct people who call him Jeremy.
