and I an terrified!! I had an abnormal pap smear a few weeks ago and they said I had cervical dysplasia. Has anyone had a colposcopy? I am so scared that it will hurt. Will my doctor have a pretty good clue of what is wrong after the procedure or do I have to wait a week for the results. I need advice.....

NOTE: THis is a colposcopy not a colonoscopy!

I have had two done now because of my two abnormal pap smears. The first one actually turned into cervical cancer which I had to get a Leep Procedure done (I was only 17!). The second one came back fine.

It doesn't so much hurt, like painful, it just makes you cramp REALLY bad, like the worst period cramps you've ever had. Take a few Ibuprofen before you go (my doctor actually recommended this to me). This will help you with your cramping. It may also burn a little bit, because they use vinegar. This is used to "lit" up the abnormal cells to see them better.

You really can't tell anything by the coloscopy. You'll have to wait to get the results back to see what's really going on down there.

I have dyplasia too and I have had many colposcopies. What they do is look at your cervix through a magnifying glass, and they pinch off the abnormal cells from your cervix. It hurts, but if you take ibuprofen a few hours before the procedure it's not as bad after they get done. But the good news is that it either stays the same, or goes away over time. And if they caught it early enough you should be fine if you go in every few months so they can moniter.

PS:Word to the wise if you have sex use protection, dysplasia can be a result of undetected hpv.

i've had several, my first at 19... they aren't terrible but they aren't any fun.... you'll basically get into the stirrups just like a regular pap smear... the tool they will use will look like little fingernail clippers on long handles... they look scarier then they really are... the doc will use this little tool to take a small piece of your cervix in the abnormal area... if the dysplasia area is small enough the doc will just remove it completely... it'll feel like cramps you get from your period, maybe a LITTLE more intense... it lasts about 2 seconds... that's it, you're done... take some ibuprofen beforehand.... you'll feel nauseous for about half an hour or less.

you will have to wait for results as they have to send the tissue to a lab to have it tested... don't be too upset right now... all the big medical terms and scary tools can be pretty intimidating, especially in an area women tend to be pretty sensitive about. you'll be fine... i've had 6 colposcopies, 1 LEEP procedure, and 1 cone biopsy and i'm fine.... you're many many steps away from anything really terrible like cancer.

good luck.

The procedure is perfomed much like a pap smear with your legs in stirrups, and should not be painful. Maybe a slight pinch if a tissue sample is removed. See the website below for full explanation of the procedure. Whether your doc has a lab in his office or not will determine how fast you will get results. Good Luck.

I'VE HAD ONE BEFORE IT'S REALLY NO BIG DEAL. THE DOC WILL USE THE SAME TOOL AS A PAP BUT HE/SHE WILL USE A TYPE OF CAMERA TO TAKE SOME PICTURES OF YOUR CERVIX AND POSSIBLY TAKE SOME SAMPLE TISSUES. JUST RELAX THE WHOLE THING WON'T EVEN LAST 5-7 MINUTES DEPENDING ON THE SKILL OF UR DOC. RELAX!!

Do'nt worry, it's not as bad as you think!!.
Try and relax while it's being done, deep breathing works, maybe
the doc will see straight away whats wrong, ask him!!.
