It's my son's birthday and i am struggling to know what to get. He has showed some interest in learning to play the guitar and has been asking for lessons. (I just haven't got round to organising them yet! Bad mother I know).
I will probably buy on line, backing this up with visiting a music shop first. I want to know what is the ideal type for a child. What should i look out for and what's an average price range. Oh and any other interesting info about guitars purchasing.

Thanx

One thing to consider when buying a guitar is the overall cost and likelihood he is to play on it. Some cheap guitars sound naff and uninspiring to play.

Yamaha guitar packages (like the one in argos are ideal for beginners) as you get an amp and guitar. The best thing would be to take him to a music shop and play a few and play about with them. Make sure you purchase an electronic tuner too as the pitch pipes are useless unless your ear is trained.

If he is quite small, there are child sized guitars too.

Price wise, £150 tops is enough for a full package (in the shops).

Good strings too - Ernie Ball.

Go for the lessons first and then buy the guitar if he seems enthusiastic. Good amps have earphone jacks too!

Go to your local music shop. See what size you need first, based on your child's height. I recommend you do NOT purchase online. It's nothing but problems. And most local stores will not touch the instrument you buy online, if it needs repair. They are cheap beyond belief. Having working in a local pop-n-mom music shop for the last 12 years, I can tell you, that the level of customer service you will get, makes the few dollars more you may pay, well worth it, to purchase your child's instrument LOCALLY. Also, most stores have a certified lessons program. You might receive some sort of discounts for purchasing the instrument at the store you are signing up for lessons in. Best of luck to you. And tell your boy to practice at least 20 minutes a day. Even if you can get him to do it 3 days a week, he will make good progress in short order. :)

What i done for my daughter was first check out e-bay, then i went to a boot fair, I got a very nice one for £5.00 i got new strings from eBay which was less than £3.00.
I done it this way because how many times have you been asked for something, go out and buy it and then it is never used, or only used for a couple of months, if she keeps it up i will buy her a better one. If you buy new it can cost you lots of money, because they will try and sell you all the other bits that go with it, butdo what someone else has said and use ebay, and the net to find out more.
I done this with fishing gear, i took up the sport didn't know if i would like it, when i found i did i sold my cheap stuff, and brought better gear.
you know what kids are like, good luck

There is no way to know how much he will like it so just buy him a cheep one. There prices vary a lot but each kind of guitar has the same number of strings so the skills are the same. If he likes it and uses it a lot then get a better one later.

look in any cite for guitars specific as their shape n weight.as the weight increases the quality of the guitar also increases.try buying simple orthodox ones than eelecteic and stylish ones .the child is supposed to adjust to it easily n country music is the best for him n his mind.sas u know music can charm a beast itll healp the child being calm and composed rather than funky n rude.encouraging such activities is to be done.try buying the wooden coated ones.it wont be stylish but its durable

lessons will teach him or a good self teach method. to choose go to like sam ash or guitar center. take the guitar and hold it up to see if the neck is straight. if it is bent either forwards or backwards dont choose that one. if its warped then it can affect the quality of the instrament, music and tuning. dont get a warped one. besides the straight neck make sure his hand fits it comfortably. if the neck is too big or small he wont be able the play comfortably. start with something simple for him, a squire strat is good and go better later. dont forget to check the neck whatever you do. thats very important.

you'd learn a lot from ebay descriptions look on ebay.they sell a staggering amount of musical instruments, professionally from "ebay stores" they are a lot of the times actual stores that also happen to sell on ebay. buy that $2.30 insurance u can get refund no matter what.

Don't buy anything until you know he's going to stick with it for goodness sake.
Just buy him the lessons and take it from there.
