It depends.
If you're politically leftist and want to live amongst sympathetic people who will join you in carping about the real and imagined evils of your former homeland, I'd suggest Canada. But not just anywhere in Canada. Urban Ontario (Toronto, Ottowa) is the most anti-American region. But there's a problem with this, as you also wish to escape the drudgery of urban life, and rural Canada (particularly rural Western Canada) is far less liberal--often even America-friendly. In fact, Albertans downright despise liberal Ontario.
You could, of course, always move to Europe. Not Eastern Europe, much of which is still grateful to America for helping liberate it from Soviet domination, but Western Europe, which has a more distant memory of Nazi occupation. But you might as well forget about trying to get away from urban life if this is your choice, as Europe is far more urbanized (and expensive) than America or Canada.
If you want to escape conservative influence, I wouldn't go for Australia if I were you, either.
There is always New Zealand, as a few others pointed out, although you'll be fighting to get in, and get a job.
If you're a true die-hard to the cause of leftist revolution and don't mind lowering your standard of living (or taking some physical risk), give Venezuela a go. Chavez is taking steps every day to ensure that nobody who disagrees with his ideology be allowed to oppose it. Bear in mind that you could be arrested or expelled from the country as a "spy," regardless of your show of solidarity.

Canada is definitely considered America Junior or American Lite. Would possibly go there, but if the US screws things up THAT badly I'm thinking I'd want to go further away. (A nuke knows no boundaries.)
I'm thinking Italy would be nice. Been there, done that—at least on a vacation—and once you get past some of the language barriers it's a great place to live. Relaxed atmosphere and still industrialized enough to have amenities like modern medicine.

New Zealand.
Auckland is a modern city surrounded by subtropical islands, sparkling waters and lush native rainforest. Unsurprisingly, it has been voted amongst the best places to live in the world. Residents enjoy a warm coastal climate without extremes of temperature.
Auckland lies across an 11 km wide volcanic isthmus separating two harbours - the Waitemata and Manukau.
The city buzzes with an atmosphere of fun and excitement. The waterfront, restaurants and bars are popular by both day and evening. Auckland, City of Sails, is a vibrant South Pacific city and offers an incomparable, unique lifestyle.

New Zealand. "New Zealand is a small, unbelievably beautiful country located in the South Pacific about three hours by plane southeast of Australia. To look at the land and its topography, it has everything the US has ... just in a miniature form. Great, sandy beaches. Rugged coastlines. Green meadows. Smoking volcanoes. Flat plains. Large, clear lakes and high snow-capped peaks. It also has a few surprises like bubbling hot mud pools and icy glaciers that adjoin sub-tropical rainforests. When I first sent postcards to my friend's back in the US, they thought all the pictures had all been faked. Around each bend, over each hill is one spectacular scene after another. Most tourists find New Zealand a picture taking heaven. "

I have a friend who was born there and said it is like a paradise.

Americans travel on vacation to most parts of the world. Using the term "escape" makes it sound as if you think the USA is like the former Soviet Union or a prison. It is not.

Baja California Mexico is close to the border with most of the services and products US citizens are familiar with. Dozens of high rise condos are going up along the beach, some of which are in the 150,000USD price range. Many expats run their own businesses on the internet and plan for full-time living. Los Bush will soon be a bad memory.

Canada! They have Social Welfare programmes, which include Free Healthcare and sorts. It's like the United States, but different. Montreal feels more international because of the French culture which is AMAZING, but Toronto relates more to a city in the US, or Halifax also.

Thank you for posting the article. There are violent extremists that do wish to cause Americans harm. We must be vigilant and report any suspicious behavior. Homeland Security is staying one step ahead of them but citizens must do their part. If you believe someone is perpetrating a crime, report it. I believe the vast majority of families want to come to the United States to escape the violence in their own countries and to make a better life. There are some who come here to undermine the United States and cause harm.

If you're talking temporarily then I'd say Mexico or some other Latin American country. It's close by, and foreign enough to give you a break from American life.
If you're talking permenantly, then I'd say Canada since it's pretty similar to what Americans are used to, and yet it's not the US.
