First of all, if you are ready to have sex, then you are ready to take responsibility for it. Get condoms. It is the *only* form of birth control that you should be using if you aren't married or in a *long-term* relationship (exclusive for at least a year--*plus* a negative HIV test).

That said, if you want to know more about your cycle, please read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler. It will give you the information to determine when you aren't fertile...but it's *still* not safe to use that as a means of birth control in a short-term relationship. The method is about 98% effective.

The pill should be taken EVERY day, starting on a Sunday or on the first day of your period (discuss the options with your doctor). Another option is the Depo Provera Shot. This is given every 3 months, and the initial one is given within the first 72 hours of your period onset.

It is best to use SOME sort of birth control, and DO NOT rely on your cycle or "fertile times" to avoid pregnancy. Condoms, the diaphragm, spermicidal gels/foams, etc are all good barrier methods. Again, DO NOT try to cheat with the fertility awareness thing...it will fail about 60-70% of the time within one year! If you don't want a child, then GET SOME sort of BIRTH CONTROL before having sex.

Definately go to your doctor and get birth control pills.... you can go on them anytime after you start your period. Many girls take it just to regulate their cycles.

You should also be sure to use condoms if you want to be 100% protected. Both methods are only 99% effective but together you're covered.

I used the rythm method when I was with my bf of four and a half years (now my husband of 9 years). We lucked out and got the timing right for a year or so, but I was off once and now I have an almost nine year old :D
