No question. I was in the seminary studying to be a priest. The guys there are 88% gay, and the ones that act str8 were closeted and just needed a little push before they raised their legs and enjoyed it.

The priesthood is not what it is supposed to be. It has become a place where gays become priest and when they become a priest they live in denial while thinking ill thoughts of other boys and men.

Harsh facts but true.

I think this was a bigger factor in days gone by. Being gay was so unacceptable in many families and in society, that being a priest would at least explain your lack of a girlfriend. I don't think men went into the priesthood to find other gay men, or to gain an opportunity to take advantage of young boys, but I do believe that it was a way out of the mainstream heterosexist world.

Today, with gay acceptance at all time highs, and the mobility of society (If mom doesn't approve, I can move 2000 miles and live in San Francisco) it is very unlikely that someone would choose the priesthood just to hide his sexuality.

No.

1- Hardly anyone in America is going into the priesthood anymore because we live in a sex crazed culture where celibacy is one of the most unattractive things imaginable.

2- Gay people generally try to hide around other gay people, where they will be accepted.

In the past I believe many gay men went into the priesthood to conceal their sexuality, and never to act on their impulsive. However; I don't think it was meant as a cover-up or to hide their identity. It was just back in the day; anything outside the scope of vanilla wasn't tolerated or accepted.

I imagine some do. They feel so guilty about being gay that they think the priesthood might save them. I think some pedophiles join the priesthood for the same reason.

No I don't think that is it at all. I think when they enter the priesthood. They are surrounded by alterboys and nuns. If they feel like some sins of the flesh it may be easier to manipulte a young alter boy than a nun. I don't really think it's a gay thing.

Not too long ago, this was a problem. Nowadays, prospective seminarians are given quite a grilling to ascertain whether they are gay or not. If they are, they are not admitted to the seminary.

Remember that being "gay" is not synonymous with pedophelia. Gays despise pedophilia just as much as heterosexuals.

Why is Rome limiting their investigations to homosexuals? The heterosexual priests have been sexually abusing women for centuries. What protection do they have?

What? Yeah, I know a ton of gay guys that are so afraid of themselves being gay and others finding out that they choose an entirely different career that will ultimately affect the REST OF THEIR LIFE.

No, I don't agree. It's easier to either keep it a secret or just tell people. No big deal.

I think maybe a generation ago when there was much more social stigma. But not now when it is much more accepted. Whether someone is gay or straight - they should want to be a preist for the right reason and be prepared to live by the vows.
