Have planned a trip to Australia for two weeks, my flight in and out of Sydney. What is the best and most economical way to spend the two weeks?

Two weeks in Australia is barely enough to see much at all. You can fit several european countries into Australia.

Since you are arriving and leaving from Sydney and you do not want to spend much money I would suggest this itinerary along with some links to help you plan your visit.

General Info on travelling and staying in Aus which I wrote out for an overseas friend whose son was visiting AUS a while back so thought it worth repeating here.

Nearly all caravan parks now have cabins and these are a great
alternative to motels and they provide both cooking and laundry
facilities if he is wanting to cook himself a meal or wash his
clothes. If he doesn't mind camping then a small pop-up tent will
keep his costs very low as camp sites for tents are rarely more than $15 per night compared to cabins at $50 - $80 per night and motels at $40 - $???. Our pubs often have rooms too and as long as the pub is open (usually til 10pm) he shouldn't have any trouble getting a room. Depending on the pub, the rooms are usually inexpensive though not the flashest of accommodation.

So depending on what type of holiday he is planning there are plenty of choices about accomodation along the way.

He shouldn't have any problems finding a beachside caravan park or motel along the way so he can have an early morning surf.

Motels and caravan receptions are usually attended until 8pm (some later) and many provide a night bell for later arrivals.

From Sydney you could travel by train either west to the blue mountains, North along the coastline and eventually to Brisbane in Qld or South to either Melbourne or Canberra (our capital city).

You could first travel to the Blue Mountains and then back to sydney the either north or south

Train travel is relatively inexpensive and allows you to see the sights you would not see if you flew or drove.

From Sydney to the Blue Mountains you can visit

Depends on what you want to see.
Austrralia is a big country....as large as the USA, so if you want to see other places than Sydney, you're going to have to fly.
Qantas offers a Boomerang Pass for discounted travel within the country, but there are some restrictions. Here's the web site:

Good luck!

Yep, stay away from Sydney! It's not exactly the most economical city to spend time in!
