It's hard to label bands into certain genres of music. Alternative is such a catch-all term that generally signifies bands that kind of link to bands played on college radio stations in the US in the eighties. Indie is a similarly generic term for British bands that were first heard on independent record labels.

Britpop applies. They were probably as influential to this media labelled scene as any band other than Blur.

My instinctive reaction would be to agree that Oasis are an indie rock band. Most people would agree, I think, even though they're no longer on an independent label.

In short, Oasis are traditional pop/rock, influenced both by 60s beat rock'n'roll (the Beatles) and late 80s psychedelia (the Stone Roses), that quickly grew from indie roots (on the Creation label, the rise charted by the NME) to become a very successful mainstream act.

Their genre varies from song to song. Compare the likes of 'Live Forever' and 'Little by Little' with songs such as 'Magic Pie' and 'Songbird'. They're totally different. Then there's in-between songs like 'The Masterplan' and 'Wonderwall'....

If I had to class them, I'd file them under Rock ("...please don't put your life in the hands / of my rock 'n' roll band..." [Don't Look Back In Anger]; "...tonight I'm a rock 'n' roll star..." [Rock 'n' Roll Star]). But whatever their genre, they're the greatest band in the world. Bar none.

Shoegazing maybe, but britpop really is a better fit.
