I'm SO ignorant about setting up a wireless network. From everything I read, you need a land line. If that is so, what's the point. I'm so confused. At one time, we had an isp service & paid dearly for it. Additionally, we live in the country, so dsl/broadis out of the question. Is there any hope?

To get wireless internet, you will need either DSL or Cable. DSL requires a landline since its through your phone line, but Cable does not require a landline. You can try going to http://www.verizonwireless.com and get nation wide internet access, but they are more costly. Nowadays, DSL and cable is only a few bucks more than dialup so you might want to get it again. Wireless does not work with dialup.

What state do you live? If you send me (via contact me on my profile) and tell me your state and zipcode, I can find out a list of providers in your area.

A standard wireless b or g network needs a connection to an ISP to allow Internet access. If you live in the country then your options are a bit limited unless a cable provider has extended their wire to your area. You can get satellite service but it is pricey for initial investment. Some rural areas have microwave providers such as beamspeed in Yuma and Imperial Counties in the desert southwest. Some mobile phone companies have broadband access but they are usually about the speed of dial up in rural areas, so again not much help.

ok first you need to have a internet service provider
by phone , cable or satellite

then you need a wireless router that you are going to connect to your DSL , CABLE or Satellite modem

then you need in every machine that you are going to connect to your local wireless network a wireless card. The majority of the new laptops comes with one

the point of the wireless network is to have a cordless environment and more mobility inside your local network

they are companies that provide wireless internet access but is a different kind of hardware that you need and they are mostly available on the cities

if you don’t have cable or a land line
you can get Satellite service is cost a lithe more than cable or DSL but you can get it in any location.

Unfortunatly, dial-up just won't make the cut, you need to subscribe to Cable, DSL or Broadband. If there is no service in your area, you can subscribe to satilite internet here:http://www.wildblue.com/getWildblue/search/02.jsp
