pretty much everthing from glass and other materials that now have becomed plastics and other ceramics were created by the search of a material better than steel. A very good one is the Titanic this one came from a professor so have to take her word for it but it did made sence here it goes: the titanic should of survived the impact of an iceburg but it didn't because the steel used was not treated properly and became brittle at low temperatures (they did not have the technology or the know how at the time, so you figure out the date) however it did not come to the knowledge of builders and engineers until much much later. During the war when ships where supposed to hold impact of certain type of artillery and shock from mines that they began to understand how important heat treatment of steel was as the temperature of water affected the material. There is also the famous bridge where many people died and is used to make engineers rings now days(so they say) as a reminder of how important engineering is and materials. Interior design is not really a specialty as people make it seem is more or less a dressing up of structure and has nothing to do with sound construction principles so all the steel use is merely for looks so it has no structural significance(unless an actual architect or engineer designed it). If is the look you are refering to of certain steel it was obtained by other means as alloying wich is one of the most important advancements we have had, in the form of forks, spoons, knives. Well i gave you some ideas to look for in the net so good luck.

If you are going to have us do your homework, at least copy the question correctly. "what does" should be "What is." What English are you in? Is it your first language?
