It's not hard to admit you've made a mistake unless you allow your ego to get in the way. A simple "My fault, I'm sorry" will usually suffice unless the mistake was catastrophic or caused great expense. Either way take steps to correct the mistake or make ammends if that isn't possible.

Well, maybe it's because we like to believe we do the best we can, and we are encountering a situation where our best just plain isn't good enough. Or, maybe we strive for perfection, or, the person who points out our mistake is someone we_______ fill in the blank -- we want to impress, we want to like us, we hate their guts and don't want them to point out our flaws, etc. So many reasons, it depends on the individuals. I don't think everyone is like that though. There are many who are enlightened, who take mistakes as an opportunity to learn. The chinese symbol for crisis translates as "danger & opportunity". a mistake is a form of crisis for some, and if you view it as an opportunity to grow, you become a more evolved human being. That's my take on it anyway. Great question!

You said the answer. We are human. The Bible says, "Pride comes before the fall." For some reason or other, we'd rather stumble, than admit anything!

Psalm 10:4
The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

normally the faulty process of reasoning that caused you to make the error in the first place will also convince you that it was never an error in the first place.

this is why some people are almost never wrong - because they are constantly reviewing their decision-making process - but are willing to easily admit it when they are.

while other people are almost always wrong, and will never realise this because they grip onto their idiocy like their most valuable possession.

It isn't for me. I make lots of mistakes. In fact, it's easy to admit to them. I'm no where near perfect, and nobody else is perfect either.

Because its like they've failed in someway or lost respect or power. They feel they are inferior and the other person is above them if they have made a mistake. When someone is right they feel elevated, important and triumpth. So which would you rather feel?

The very first humans did the same thing. The snake deceived Eve and Adam knew what happened and ate of the fruit-then when he was confronted, he said, 'The woman you gave me....' It is an imperfect human reaction we have for fear of the consequences.

Everyone likes to think they are perfect. To admit to any mistake disallows this premise - equals down to ego!@

I think this is because many humans think of themselves as close to perfect so they think that they don't make mistakes.

Pride is deeply rooted in our sin nature, which we're born with. It's linked to the more fundamental idea of selfishness, which is contrasted to the benevolence of God and good people.
