I went through the training to become a Kirby salesman. I'm figuring they came to your door already or a friend or someone (who works for them) showed it to you. Here's my rap on them. The salesman at Kirby will go through any lawful way to manipulate you into buying their vacuum(for the most part) for starters. In reality, they aren't really better than any other vacuum. It has more suction power, but after a point (the point where most the other vacuums are) it doesn't really make it more clean. They only "beat" your your vacuum because their vacuum has the little filter thing on the side to show how much it picked up. Your vacuum doesn't have that, it just goes straight into the bag or whatever, so it looks like they keep picking up more with theirs even after you've already vacuumed with yours. And don't let the dust mite thing get you. That is their last resort. Number 1, having dust mites don't really harm you. Number 2, if you have a problem with having them, you could just use the vacuum you have now. It'll get them. I tried it at home. Hopefully that helps.

For years they had a name for being reliable. They were the vacuum of choice for many hotels and businesses. My inlaws owned a clothing store in the 70s and still used the Kirby they bought for the store for 20 years later (after 5-6 years of service in the store). However, I think technology has caught up and passed them by and they don't do a better job than any other unit.
For the price, buy another brand and replace it every few years.
(BTW - Dust mites are bad. If you are prone to alergies they are a major contributing factor. But, I doubt Kirby does a better job than anyone else).

From what I understand, they're extremely expensive and usually pretty heavy. They do a good job, but there are many other vacuums out there that do just as good a job and cost a fraction. Look up the Boss by Eureka or the Windtunnel by Hoover. They were rated best buys by Consumer Report which tests and evaluates all sorts of products and publishes their funbiased findings based on quality, reliability, value, etc.

Dad has one at home, bought it in the early 70's. Still works just great. It has had some maintenance over the years, mostly belt replacements. It is far superior to the Eureka's at Wal Mart (that thing didn't hardly last a year!)

I sold mine and bought a MIEL.
As far as the shampooer that's all it does is shampoo the top of the carpet. Does not get the stuff down inside.
Never really had any complaints about mine except it was an older and I think it was loosing it's power.

I am just an old man lol and I tell you this. Long time ago they were the best you could get. But today you are just buying a name of what they were before. So go with another brand lol.
