Do literacy and intelligence quotient go together?

It is generally believed that one's intelligence quotient goes on increasing with one's level of education goes on upwards. So is there any truth that levels of literacy and intelligence go hand in hand?

I recently attended a training seminar given by a school psychologist with a PhD and many years of experience who said that they do. There are some cognitive tests you can give to very young children that measure intelligence without literacy, but those designed for older children and adults rely on it pretty heavily.

The second answerer seems to be referring to the abstract notion of general intelligence (g) thought to lie behind the intelligence quotient rather than IQ as measured by cognitive tests. It's a valid point. There are many different kinds of intelligence. Every individual and every culture holds some of them to be more important than others, and a cognitive test only measures some of them.

I have students who use a complex mix of kinesthetic, visual/spatial, and naturalistic intelligence to spear squid with a three-prong, for instance. You need to know where the squid are, where the tiger sharks live, where to aim, how long you can hold your breath, and which squid you need leave alone. Few of these skills are measured on tests that identify gifted or disabled students at our school.

Most intelligence tests are biased toward the discrete use of written language and mathematics; in part because it is easier to quantify these types of responses. People who have higher levels of literacy test higher; but that does not necessarily mean that those who are illiterate are less intelligent.

I don't think so. I've met people who are super smart, book wise, but otherwise were quite "simple" minded. Nothing wrong with that. But to me, intelligence does include some "common sense" which some people just don't seem to have.
