The more I travel, the more I realise pple are very wary of each other and base opinions on what someone else has told them and not thr own experience. Why is this?

I think most Americans think Africans are decent people that live on a mysterious continent.

My first experience with an African was when I went to Spain. I offered my sleeping berth on a ferry to Ibiza to a fellow from Senegal. He'd just been refused one because "there were none left" I felt bad for him and didn't want to be a party to an obvious insult. He declined and I never made it to my berth because we talked and drank and had a great time flirting with Spanish females. When we got to Ibiza he stayed in touch and helped me find lodgings nearby. I'll never forget his easy laugh and his kindness to a fellow traveller. So I think well of Africans...

People in most countries only see the bad of what happens in the other countires, unless they watch history, geography, or learning channels.

That being said, most Americans will see Africans as being weak. Based on what is seen, Africa has the most corrupt governments and a lot of countries are constantly under threat by minority groups of guerilla fighters.

The people in those countries live more in fear than in strength and there are too many pockets of individuality and not enough unity in the face of danger.

The governments spend more time blaming everyone around them for their problems, and not enough time doing something about it. Some governments would rather receive aid than receive training.

This is a lot of what we see in America.

I have nothing against the African people, and I am sure you aren't everything we see on the news or T.V. Any person I have met, from Africa, in the U.S. is a very nice person and do what they need to survive. It just seems to be another situation in Africa.

I'm not sure that I think anything specific about Africans, I know that I would love to travel there, would love to show my children other parts of the world and other cultures. I know only from news, that there are many, many very poor and malnourished people, but ofcourse you can find the same thing right here in the USA. Also I know (or have heard, atleast) that AIDS is a severe problem for many of the countries in Africa.

I've been to Africa quite a few times for the USAF...

Mombasa Kenya was beautiful. Very modern city to me. Wouldn't eliminate it as a potential vacation spot in the future...

Djibouti Djibouti on the other hand was quite poverty ridden. (Of course all I saw was the airport, but the shanty town next to the airport reminded me of Haiti... Wouldn't go back there again.

Mogadishu Somalia... my goodness... looked like a country hit by civil war... no desire ever to go there again...

Ndjamena Chad... kind of a mix of both worlds I would say... old world and modern... dirt roads and running water... confusing... don't know if I'd ever go back...

Adis Abbaba Ethiopia... looked just like it did on tv when they had their famine... somewhat modern... wouldn't go back.

Cairo Egypt... very modern, very ancient... would go back for a vacation...

I'm not able to remember where else I've been... during my travels, I noticed the same thing over and over again.

By and large, the people were friendly, even when they learned we were Americans... most were polite...

Keeping an open mind, I realize people in those countries are just like people in my country... we just want to make life better for ourselves and our families...

My experiences in Africa have all been pleasant... the people I've found to be friendly and strong... the counrtyside beautiful... it's the lack of creature comforts in some cases that I missed... but I realize it's another continent, different cultures...

I'm in the UK and on t.v we always see programs about Africans who cross into our country illegally. Many people believe that illegal immigrants are responsible for a lot of crime in our country. That is why some people in the UK might be wary of Africans.

This is the image we get from the t.v. I don't know whether it is true or not.

It is the same everywhere. People base their opinions of an entire nation on film and television.

I have never been to Africa, but I'm sure if I did visit, I woud be amazed by the diversity and the juxtaposition of modern and ancient and I would be surprised at every turn as my stereotypes of the place melted away.

This is why traveling is so important!! We must all be citizens of the world!!

Well I personally think Africans are from Africa, and that is all.

And people are always wary of the unfamiliar. Think how many less fish we would eat if trout was wary of the unfamiliar power bait.

Sadly, only the wars make the news. So, in general, many assume it is one corrupt, crazy dictator after another. Lots of killing and lots of civil war. Mental images of poverty and starvation.
I think we all know there is much, much more, but these are the things that come to mind quickly.

People are people, and pretty much the same everywhere. Cultures, political systems, religious beliefs, even food, and dress, can wrap them in different packages.

But at the end, people are people.
