My garage door is like 11 years old almost. It just dawn on me that I use to just press the remote or the button inside the garage once and the door would either open or close automatically. With one push it will open but now I have to hold the button until it closes otherwise it just dances up and down. What is up with that?

Have you ever oiled the spring or the joints? If not, get some WD40 and spray it on them. You should do this abotu 2 times a year. Could just be too much pressure on your spring. The other thing is that if your door has one of those electronic eye kid safety systems on it, it might just be dirty or slightly out of alignment.

I have an old garage door opener that does the same thing. Not sure, but I think it's the remote. For some reason the signal gets weaker over the years, so now I have to push and hold the button to make the door go up or down. You can try getting a new remote, but they're not cheap (in many cases you're better off getting a new garage door opener installed). For now, try pushing the button and holding it for 2-3 seconds to get the door to go down. That works for my garage door.

Does the door go part way down then bounce up? If so, check the photo safety sensors, make sure that the light(s) are on each one. They could be out of alignment, broken or dirty.

Does the door touch the floor then bounce back up? If so, consult your manual if you still have one. If not, you should be able to look up the information on the manufacturers website. It's possible that the limits need to be adjusted. It could be that the door "senses" something in the way when it touches the floor and bounces back up because the limits are set too far.

Well it sounds to me like you got a weak battery in your remote try putting a new one in it and see what happens.
If that does not help then look at the power driver for door. It is the big square box you see when door is in down position. You should see a very small wire hanging out of it this is the reciever antena. Make sure all of it is clean from dirt dobbers to wasp nest lol.

Does your door have photo eyes 6 inches off the floor on both sides of your opening. If so, than you have an alignment problem. You need to point them at each other so that the lights on them stay on constant.
If you don't have photo eyes, than you may have a bigger problem that reqires a new circut board.
Hope you get it working again.

on the side of the opener there are two servo type adjustments(like a dial) the one for the downward pressure just needs to be turned down, its very simple. you can do it yourself very easily

I agree with bmwdriver11. The optic sensor is probably dirty or out of allignment. Check them out.

Good Luck!
