Why is it that Dr's and Nurses swear by tylenol for almost every kind of pain? I understand that it does work for SOME people. Is there anyway I can talk to my DR and convey to him that it just doesnt work for me? Acetominophen makes me sick, and they just wont listen . Are there any specific ways to talk to DR.'s to get them to listen?
I go the my NEW Dr,'s wednesday please help.
Thank you

This includes acetominophen mixes as well. The higher the "tylenol" content the worse i feel.

I think doctors are sometimes afraid to prescribe other pain medicines like Vicodin and even Morphine. They think the patient can become addicted to it, where Tylenol (or Acetaminophen) isn't addicting.

My doctors were the same way. Even when I was dying of pain, my doctor still only gave me Tylenol and codeine. I eventually ended up getting admitted into a hospital for four days I was in such bad shape.

Hopefully your new doctor will give you something else, instead of suggest Tylenol. Tell them you are allergic. Even if you don't break out in hives or a rash which is a true allergic reaction, you do get a bad reaction to the medicine. If you tell them you are allergic they should give you something else.

You don't say what the source of your pain is but you don't have a lot of easy choices in the USA anyway. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin are about all you can get. They all come in countless brand names but they're all just the same. Acetaminophen is easiest on the stomach but without some added ingredients like caffeine and codeine it is not at all effective for me should I have a headache. Excedrin Tension has some caffeine in it which makes it a little more effective as a general painkiller. It is unlikely that your doctor will give you anything with codeine in it as most here in the USA mistakenly believe it is rapidly addictive, which it is not.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol and other brands) is the safest medication for relieving pain and fever,so that's why Dr. won't listen. Ibuprofen interferes with high blood pressure medicine. Aspirin causes problems in children. Naproxin Sodium works well for monthly crams, but can cause allergic reaction in some people.

Tell them that you have a "sensitivity to Tylenol"...you are not actually allergic to it, but it makes you feel sick, so you are sensitive to it.

If that fails, tell them it gives you a rash. (a little white lie) but then it cannot be prescribed for you.

Keep in mind that this will include medications containing acetaminophen (Vicodin, Lor-tabs, etc).

The "swear by" Tylenol mostly because of the monetary incentives and freebies they get for promoting it. I worked for McNeil (Johnson & Johnson) for 5 years.

A lot of doctors that I know and work with swear by ibuprofen. If you can take Advil or Motrin, give it a shot. It will beat your liver and stomach up less as well.

Tell your new doctor you are allergic to acetophetamine. There are plenty of prescription drugs on the market.
