My parents were pretty good about money. I used to get 50p a week (!) and while some of it went on sweets, we had to put some of it into a savings account and it also had to go towards buying Christmas presents and holiday money - My parents would double my contribution. Also i could ern extra by doing chores like gardening or washing the car. We are talking 35 years back here, and 50p was worth more than it sounds now!!

Up until I left school at 16 I got two shillings (about 10 p in todays money). Out of this I spent between one shilling and one shilling and six pence on a pair of nylons (the dearer ones were finer denim and had patterned heels) and the other sixpence went on a comic or some sweets.

i also used to get 50p a week but this basic income was often supplemented by additional 50ps from visiting relatives. i remember being able to sustain a comfortable lifestyle in which i could afford my various vices which were as follows; penny sweets, comics, second-hand books, crayons and colouring pencils (markers were prohibited by my parents because i always managed to get ink on my clothes if i ever used them, these were the days prior to crayola washable), scrapbooks, stickers and notebooks... oh and i believe bubbles were purchased on a regular basis. ah the simple life.
