If you have a remote controlled garage door opener, it is possible that it responded to some other signal. I'd check to see if anything is missing. If not, it was probably an accident.

There are a lot of ways to gain access. You may have a opener that you can change the code for. If someone has the same code the door will open. I know i've actually done it before. I went to a friends, relative's house. When we were waiting for the relative to show up from church, my child was playing in the car. She hit the garage door opener in the car and the realtives garage opened becuase we had the same style opener and it was coded the same. There are a set of "dip switches" on the back of the garage door opener. Change them and change them on the remote the same as the opener. Then there is a different code in place. Maybe someone figured out the code and opened your door. I've known some kids to do that.

I am assuming that it is an automatic door. If so then there are a couple of possibilities.
1. Some one else has a code that is the same or one channel away from your opening code.
2. Certain aircraft radios operate on or close to the same frequency as some older garage door openers, and low flying aircraft can open your door.
What to do about it.
1. Reset your codes. See the instruction manual or go on line to the wbsite of the manufacturer.
2. Update the system, or manually lock the outside of your door. (This is always the best security)

most all garage doors that we install come with a factory setting for the opener.....u must change it and dont allow anyone to watch u do it not even the guy that installed it or the contractor!
most have 12 slide pins in the back of the unit and the remote has the same. dont do like most and go" first pin up, second pin down and so forth..........
u can by a remote at lowes and it will have the same factory setting as urs if u didnt change the pins after installed!!
we have installed many and i can ride thru a development and click a remote and 2 out every 10 garage door will open.......it sad but true!
change ur pin code every time u change the light bulbs in the back!

If you have an automatic garage door opener it could have been a malfunction. We have had it happen before where we didnt look long enough and it looked like it was down but it wasnt something happened where it bounced right back up after going all the way down.
Theft would include something being missing.

A friend did that to his neighbor. For some reason his remote could open his neighbor's garage door and he kept doing opening and closing his garage and laughing his head off while his neighbor was trying to figure out what was going on. He told him afterwards it was him.

If you live in an area where the homes are close together then your neighbors might have the same type of door opener and the signal opened yours as well. You will have to wait to see if it happens again. If it does you may have to get a new opener.

When you last closed your garage door there might have been something blocking the sensor so it re-opened. That's happened to me a couple of times. Just make sure there's nothing in the way of the sensor.

It could be it didn't close when you left. I watch mine all the way down. Once in a while it will reverse before it shuts off when closing. If nothing is missing, I'd say this is probably what happened. Either that or someone has the same frequency for theirs as you do for yours.
