Yes, it's a specially formulated wax, and the liquid is mostly water. The specific gravity or density of the compounds is carefully controlled by the manufacturer so that when the lamp heats the base of the container, the wax warms up it becomes lighter than the water, so it rises. At the top, it cools, becomes denser and sinks again.

Yeah, its wax. The heat from the lamp makes it melt and squidge around. Have no idea what the other liquid is tho.
