Isn't this something you wonder about whenever you go to an amusement park?

I was a character one summer at Cedar Point. We had chilled vests that we wore under the costumes. We also drink gallons of water to keep from being dehydrated. Also had two shifts of characters, half hour rotations.

And yes it was very hot. But in the fall they were quite comfortable.

LilIrishGirl is on the right track.

At WDW they would spend a limited time outside. The suits are not air cooled or air-conditioned. I did hear that C3P0's suit has a little fan unit in it, however.

They do not get paid a lot more than other cast members.

They do not "relay" the charachters. Charachter Cast Members have to be trained in body language and they all have to learn to write in their charachters handwriting. Believe it or not there are people who go to the diferent parks to make sure Mickey signs his autographes the same as the Mickey in Disneyland (CA)!

It really is a hard job. I friends with a goofy and it was miserable, but it was a great way to interact with the guests and make a real magical moment for the kids!

They dont. Unfortunately most of them are miserable.
Some of the suits have a built in fan type thing. But often its just not enough.
Some people keep ice packs on them. And take the heads off every chance they can!

They spend very short amounts of time outside, and give the costume to another worker. They're probably only out about 15 mins at a time.

I wore an Easter Bunny suit once. No cooling abilities in that at all. I surely couldn't do that every day!

Some of them have built-in air circulation fans. Some even have actual air conditioners with compressors. Others just get hot.

I think most of those suits have a fan of some sort inside of them.
