Very carefully test an inconspicuous area of carpet with diluted paint thinner. If the color is not removed, then treat the paint spot with it. If paint thinner removes the color, try acetone free nail polish remover again on an area you can test for colorfastness. If this doesn't remove the color, and it shouldn't, use it on the paint spot. Dampen the paint spot with a cloth and blot with a clean cloth. Go slowly, turning the cloth frequently so you don't put the paint you've removed back onto the carpet, or smear it around.

Use a paint thinner. Apply it to a rag and rub it in to the effected spot. You can then use a carpet cleaner after the paint marks are removed

Depends on the type of paint and carpet... also if it is fresh paint (still wet) or dry.
I have used "Goof-Off" before and "Goo-Gone". Both can be found at the big name hardware stores.
