When entering an establishment, you should be acknowledged, but that rarely happens. Customers are often treated as if they are bothering the workers. This seems to be a trend, and I wondered what might be the cause??

I think is starts with how people are raising their kids, they have absolutly no manners, and half of them dont have respect for their parents either, so....if they dont have it at home they certainly will not be respectful at work.

I know that where I work (a restaurant) we are understaffed more than not. I have to admit it would be a hard decision as a manager on how many servers or hostesses are on the floor. There is never a week where we are busy each day of the week at the same time. It always seems like we get a rush right after the manager cuts two people because we are slow. All I know is that I, myself try my hardest to give the best customer service possible and remain friendly, but at the same time it is hard to maintain perfect customer service when I get four tables sat within five minutes and already have five other tables.

I'm sure there are many places where there is no excuse and if I were you I wouldn't go there to eat again or get carryout if possible. Some places just aren't very good at hiring reliable or quality staff.

I think much of it depends on what part of the country that you are in. I have been in some places where customer service is close to non-existent and others where it seems to be pretty good. Some generalizations are that the coasts don't have very good service, while the center of the country does much better at customer service.

at the restr. where i work anytime someone comes in the front door, we always call out to them hello or come on in or seat yourself, something that lets them know we saw them and they are welcome in there, i also make it a point to ask if it is their 1st time in the restr. and then explain the way it all works, from the menu and the favorite entrees, the sides, the prices, tell them about drink refills and even the self serve salsa bar, 9 out of 10 times they end up my customers and yes i know my tip depends on my service so i just try to think how i feel when dining out and all the things that frustrate me or make me think...hey i like this place i will definitely be back....but i have a few on my staff and you are right, they act like they are being bothered when someone asks for anotyher beer, etc. maybe its because they are younger and mom and dad has already paid the cell phone bill for the month so they really dont care about doing anything except talking on that cell phone....if ever in galveston, stop in and see us and rate our service, just be careful sometimes friday and sat. nights are very crowded with an hour wait time for a table.

I think one thing is that people are not taught to respect others at home. I know this may be different but when I go through the McDonalds drive thru the least they can say is thank you and not be on their cell phone or something. I always tell my kids don't ever let me find out that is how you work for someone or the way you treat people.

I feel that parents are not raising there kids to show respect anymore. It's also the job of the employer to tell them that the customer should be waited on or acknowledged when they come into the store.

Your observation is very true! I realize that most customers are treated like cattle pushed through and then pushed out! I think the workers are think that no matter how many people they piss off it doesn't matter because there is always a new crowd that will come through! They need to realize that people talk and their business will suffer!

Live by the golden rule. Treat others the way you want to be treated, put others first no matter who you are and if you do you will see a difference. Stop worrying about others and start making a difference in yourself. Is somebody is rude, kill them with a kind word. Then you'll start to notice a difference.

Wow! I'm not too sure where you live, honey, but down here in Texas it's the other way around. When I just want to walk into a store to look at stuff, people are always coming up to me to ask if everything's ok and to let them know if they can help in any way.

It bothers me most of the times because I'm a solo shopper. I don't need people to be asking me if they can help me because most of the times they can't.

improper parenting, though a child with a free will goes a long way, what with peer pressure, cell phones, etc. we've just become a rude society. no one seems to be in fear of losing his/her job, either. that's what i don't get. don't show up, show up late, treat customers like crap, keep the job. wuwt?
