He takes a bottle of expressed milk 2 times per day while I am at work - I pump at work. We do have extra expressed milk in the freezer as backup. I was also planning to start rice cereal at 6 months, but do not know if I should wait until after he is weaned to formula.

Don't put the child on a timetable. Slowly introduce new foods and textures for him, but allow him to say when is the right time to stop using breast milk. He will gravitate to new foods and drinks and slowly wean himself off the breast milk. Each child is different so it may take a while, but do'nt put him on any expected time frame.

Start by mixing some formula with breast milk. I would do like 3/4 of a bottle of breastmilk to 1/4 bottle formula. Do that for a couple days and then slowly increase the percentage of formula. I wouldn't introduce the cereal and the formula at the same time. Get him used to one first (for about a week) to make sure there are no allergic reactions. But I don't think you need to have him completely on formula before you introduce cereal.

I have a 9 month old who I breastfeed but I started giving him some formula about 2 months ago. We started him on cereal when he was 4 months old. Good luck!
