Dear
Certification is Good and Shows your Lavel of Expertise in Some what Field.
Designing Certification is not a Game of 2 or 3 boys. There are Plenty of Man Power is involved and they Search the Market for Validity of Certification
Cerification May be Product Dependent Such as MCSE,MCSA,CCNA,CCNP,RHCE,CNE
or May be neatural Like A+,N+

Note Qualification Always Pays you Back.Don't Bother that XYZ Cerificate will be in used after 3 years or Not
Many Employers Prefer Experience So No Matter if Your Certification is Older.
But Remember One Crutial Thing
WORK IS MORE IMPORTANT THEN CERTIFICATION
Certification Gives you a Chance to Get Into the Company But if you wants to remains in Job Do Work.Your Work Pays Employer Not your Certification.

Rest About Degrees
They are Good Enough . But Not Market Ready
They Dovelop there Course 2 Years After Boom Time.Generally The Course Doveloper are Not working in Market So they looses the Pace.
Some Time Employer Prefer to Higher Degree Holders to Fullfils the Team. It is Done to Get the Order From Govt Sector Only.
But Again the Certification Holder are Prefered to Work.

Take a Example of BE Computer Science Stud
they know what is Networking they know what is Protocol
But When a Exchange Server is Configured MCSE needed
When a RedHat VOIP Solution is required a Redhat Certified +Experience is needed

Morel of the Story Every Education have its scope
Degree is Good But You need to find the Job your Self Sience where you want to go
Certification Gives you a ready made Path
I hope It will help you
Regards
Alok

A Cert Ed is correctly a PGCE and is a POST graduate qualification for people to learn now to teach the subject (and other general studies). It is a 1 year top-up qualification but rememebr you need the degree first..

Degrees are stronger then certs. However in certain specialized fields a cert is more practicle. For example CNA (certified nursing assistant). However one default of certs is that they are only as good as what is going on in society. A B.S. degree will always be a BS and a MS or PhD will always be one regardless of time or place. A cert is only good in the specific field and if that field expires for is no longer in demand or something new comes out better then the previous that cert is useless.

Example would be MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Eng). Which supposetly pays pretty well. However, lets say microsoft changes their product line that cert will no longer be valid. Or lets say they go out of business.

Unfortunatley, with certs you have to recertify yourself every so often or retest.

No, a certificate of education is just that, a certificate. It used to be the qualification needed to teach but new teachers (those not employed at the time of the change over) neeed to have QTS (qualified teacher status) which is obtained by a post graduate qualification for one year PGCE or by taking a three/four year degree.
