"However" is usually classified as an adverb, since it is usually used to modify sentences. A "conjunctive" as referred to in the previous answers is a type of adverb. I can't think of how it could be used as a preposition or an adjective. It could be used as a noun only in a humorous or poetic context:
His speech was so full of howevers it was hard to follow.

"However" can function as an (1) adverb or as a (2) conjunction (conjunctive adverb).
Examples:
