I choose Buffon. He won the award of best goalie.. and he is the best goalie (and of course, so was Dino Zoff who player with Italy in '82).
Buffon also has MUCH MORE class than that stupid Barthez. Because, when Italy lost to them in '98 in the semi-finals, Barthez went to them and laughed in their faces.
My pick? GIANLUIGI BUFFON!

to elgil- i think they were both at fault, about the actions & words that were being exchanged. but that doesn't stop me from saying zidane was more at fault.. and that words are ALWAYS exchanged to one another on the field. Heabutting? Only when Zidane's on the field. He also headbutted someone when he played for Juventus.

Buffon easily. I was watching the final with my son and his friend who is a big France fan. During the overtime I told him "You don't want to go to PKs Italy's got the better keeper."

It is very obvious! How could you compare Buffon, a world-class goalkeeper with outstanding reflex and anticipation, to Barthez, a baldy clown under the goal?
You see, in final match Buffon played brilliantly and confidently. In the other hand, almost all set-pieces for Italy near Barthez' goal were dangerous.

I'm sick of hearing "Buffon is the best". He is not, he can't save penaties worth a dime, there are better goalkeepers out there, like Germany's Jens Lehmann and Portugal's Ricardo. As for Barthez, I've seen him make great saves, Buffon is good too, but neither Barthez or Buffon are the best.

So Buffon played better...doesn't mean Barthez didn't play well. He made some pretty great saves and your being biased in favor of Buffon. If you like Buffon great, but don't put down Barthez!

Buffon is better. He's made really good saves. Barthez has some problems. He never saves the ball. He always hits the ball away from him which is kind of dangerous.

Gianluigi Buffon, there's no doubt is there? i'm not an italy fan so this is not a biased opinion, he has kept a long clean sheets except the one goal , but come on that was an own goal, so it doesnt count. he is GOOD!Barthez had his moments before, and now this is Italy's year no? there=)

na dog iker casillas is better than buffon but buffon is better than barthez; isnt even that great any more.but buffons cheating as.s team juventus sucks. Buffon, along with former Juventus goalkeeper Antonio Chimenti and several other players, participated in illegal betting on Serie A matches while with Parma. The following day, he voluntarily allowed himself to be questioned by Turin magistrates in an attempt to clear his name. he probably snitched on every one else.

Buffon is simply the best goal keeper in the world. But taht doesn't take any thing away from barthez cos he is among the best.
