You've got to make sure that it is actually the right time since a lot of time women has false warnings. Some of the obvious signs are:- broken amniotic sack, Bloody- show, Contractions are 2mins apart and lasting 1min, the urge to move your bowels and most obvious is 'crowning' of the baby's head.
When the time is right, position yourself in the McRoberts position ie. lie on your back with legs flexed up and towards chest, this assists in further dilating the vaginal passage. Have someone position themself in front of you with their hands applying gentle pressure on the baby's head, thats just in case of an explosive delivery. NOTE: DO NOT LET THEM PULL OR PUSH THE BABY! You will need to breathe in panting breaths and only push when you feel the urge to. Overall the BEST thing you can possibly do is call your Dr. or Call for an ambulance (911) the dispatchers are trained to offer support or even assist in delivery over the phone. DON'T FORGET - CALL 911!!
In case you're wondering, I've delivered more than 2doz babies in my carreer as a medic.

Your body will probably do most of it for you..but when you are told to push then it's the same muscles as you use when you do a poo...except a lot bigger and much more painful. Just try to remember that when the baby's head crowns you need to slow it down by panting, that way you shouldn't tear. Good luck!

well, it all depends on where you are and how close to your due date you are... if you happen to be in the hospital, on the maternity ward, in bed, with you feet up in stirrups, and your due date has past, is today or in the next week or so, and there happens to be a very compitent doctor very close by, then I say by all means PUSH!! if on the other hand, you are at home, alone, or with someone who has no clue about "birthing babies" , and it is nowhere near your due date then I say, do you damndest not to do any pushing whatsoever and get your butt to the hospital NOW!! good luck.

Your body will respond - you will 'have to PUSH'. It's like having a large [very large] bowel movement. Sorry about the description, but I've had five kids.

The doctor told my wife it's just like taking a cr*p. Unfortunately for him, she did - all over him! But the motion is the same.

bare down chin on your chest, take a deep breath and push! Trust me, your body will know what it's doing when it is time.
