Steely Dan (Fagan & Becker) is one of my favorite bands. I've listened to them since their first album and must credit their music for my skills on guitar. I would love to listen to other INTELLIGENTLY written music in the same vein - not tribute music but stuff that shows the same interesting chord structures/progressions, great horns and superfine lyrics.

If you know of such music, please tell me band names so I can buy thier CDs.

BETTER yet... if you have a band that aspires to this kind of intelligent music in the Ottawa area and are looking for a guitarist with strong vocals, let me know!

I suppose the Michael McDonald era of the Doobie Brothers could be considered one since Michael and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter both Doobie were also in Steely Dan... You may also want to check out 10CC... while not as Jazz oriented as the Dan - their music is quite complex and amazing. Other bands to look at would be the Crusaders - Larry Carlton - Weather Report - I guess Supertramp would be another. One thing's for sure Steely Dan's music is quite unique and not often duplicated or mimiced. I've been a devoted fan since hearing the hypnotic intro to Do It Again on Can't buy a Thrill.

Well there will be no band out there like the dan ever, I have loved the dan since I first heard peg blaring out of my dads hi fi. But I'll have to go with Salus and say that Larry Carlton has a sound similar to the dan on most of his albums, Supertramp has the crazy lyrics and instrumentation, The Doobie Brothers in my opinion are more southern rock and pop than the dan on their worst day. Ben Folds Five and some of Ben Folds solo projects are dan reminiscent....And any of 10 CC's albums are pretty good and have some good lyrics I think.....But hate to break to ya, just stick to the dan, you won't find anything as good..
