Going accross on ferry to Cherbourg on a short break. Any ideas on where to stay not too far from the port?

Dieppe is very nice.
There is a ferry from New Haven .
The beach is stony, but at low tide lots of sand.
Great fish restaurants , plus a Castle on top of the cliff

I would suggest visiting the area east of Cherbourg which is called in french "val de saire". Both Barfleur (some 20 km from Cherbourg) and Saint Vaast la Hougue are small and charming fishing ports. Nice places for a 1or 2 days visit.
