Soren Kierkegaard, probably.

He's a guy who wrestled with the doubts inherent in human existence, without ever wimping out and finding premature solutions just for his own piece of mind. In doing so, he explored much of the territory between reason and faith.

I can't say he was a happy man, but he possessed great spiritual integrity.

(Other favorites include Ludwig Wittgenstein and Blaise Pascal.)

bertrand russell has always been a favorite of mine, among others. I admire the way he led his life, as he once described it "was a constant quest to find love, justice, and truth".
