Are you asking a question or stating an opinion?
....some religions consider 'Martyrdom' the 'ultimate sacrifice' for ones religion. As we see, this is especailly true in the Middle Eastern religions. People grow up in households that are exposed too and practice only one religion and are subsequently 'deeply affected' by that religions teachings....
For me personally, every religion CAN be a "path" (and I say that loosely) to God (higher being) (which is really the ultimate end to any belief system). What one you choose to believe in or follow is an individual choice,
Look at some of the greatest people in history.....Ghandi, Padre Pio, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, etc....They all used their practice of 'their' religion as a vehicle to what they believed their 'higher power' was.
One can speak for years (and they have) about the rights and wrongs of any religion. The bottom line is that it is simply 'a vehicle' that 'works' for that person to gain closeness to their God (higher power)

In Christianity, we recognize that we all die, we are supposed to try to kill the old man, as in our sinful old selves, and live for Christ as a new man, as being born again. It is a little complicated in places, but the intent as it says in one place, "As much as is in you, live peaceably with all men." Unfortunately, some of us don't have that much in us, and sometimes the neighbors were difficult to live with either way. Still, Christianity does not, and never has, called, claimed, or demanded that Christians kill others or even kill themselves for their religion. Read the Bible, it just isn't in there, and if someone says it does, look carefully at the context, they are twisting words.

No religion, but rather its preachers that take the gullible masses for a ride, to serve their own agenda ask (in the name of religion) to die, 'coz as (I think it was) Karl Marx who said:
Religion is the opium of the masses.

The New Testament does not condone killing others or the self -- but it is my understanding that the traditional Japanese culture/religion demands this (Kamikaze, to die for the emperor) and so does Jihad.
However, you are expected to die for your faith if asked to recant.
