PL Travers never gave a firm answer about who Mary Poppins really was, she wanted to let the reader decide.

Mary Poppins was originally a book written by P.L. Travers. The first book of the series was published in 1934 and told the story of a vain, cynical, and magical English nanny. She was blown in by a windstorm to 17 Cherry Tree lane in London to watch the banks children. Mary Poppins and the children go on a variety of adventures through London until Mary abruptly leaves. She returns in other books in the series (Mary Poppins Comes Back, Mary Poppins Opens the Door, and Mary Poppins in the Park, Mary Poppins from A-Z, and three others).
In 1964 Disney bought the rights to Mary Poppins and produced a film starring Julie Andrews. In 2004 rights were brought by Broadway and it is set to open October 14th of this year.

The ultimate deceiver...Satan in disguise, at minimum was a witch...come on, she used an umbrella to fly. Also, supercalafragilisticexpialidocious is not all the different that abracadbra.
That is not much of departure from a broom.
I saw this movie as a small child and was so terrified by it they kicked us out of the movie theaters. I can't even watch the Sound of Music with Julie Andrews in it without getting the willies. It has scarred me for life!
