you just had to watch the World Cup to see his managerial abilities, NONE
The FA were looking for something different when they appointed Sven, He got lucky in that he just won Serie A, the FA dived in thinking that he must be a Tactical genious winning Serie A.
How WRONG they were.
He had just won Europes most defensive league, and if you want a Defensive coach then Sven's your Man.
4 years as England coach and HE STILL didnt know his best team in Germany.
The England Team were one of the most BORING and UNINVENTIVE teams in Germany, And although Sven did'nt help I think that the English Press and People got WAY ABOVE themselves thinking that they WOULD have WON the World Cup.
That was NEVER gonna Happen
BAD Team BAD Coach

If any of the writers try to a assess the man professionally and not based on their emotions they will find he has a very long and successfully credible track record in the game both as England Manager and club coach. His "style" may not have been perfect for the English temperament or type of game played regularly, but certainly better than the long ball up to the big centre forward of yesteryear that he eventually relented to after the dire shortage of English striking talent available. I mean can you honestly tell me Crouch is an international standard striker. Even Owen and Rooney injured were the best available. Defoe can't get into the Spurs team, Bent is probably another one season wonder and then who does England have. This is why the English league is full of foreign players and as such so successful, the homegrown talent is just not good enough, or plentiful enough.
So Sven did a great job for England all things considered. And if you compare his salary to the very much over-rated Ferdinand and Terry to name but two, England got Sven at a huge saving.

Yes, lots of people have opinions on Sven Goran Eriksson's managerial abilities. Ten points please.

He was atrocious. He kept his job so long because of a combination of his contract being so large, long and expensive to pay off, no one being an adequate replacement (but now we fortunately have Steve McClaren. Oh joy) and the false dawn of the 5-1 mauling of Germany.

He ruined the chances of lifting a World Cup for possibly the greatest group of England players ever (and I'm not necessarily referring to the squad he picked).

After four years in the job, he was STILL experimenting with different line-ups and players. How can you expect players to perform to the best of their abilities if there is no consistency within a team? If he had a proper footballing understanding, he wouldn't have started David Beckham in most matches. But Beckham brings in too much sponsorship and media attention to be left on the bench, unfortunately that's what it comes down to.

Sven was a decent manager, rated 9th in the world, reached three quarter finals in three tournaments. Lacked inspiration at crucial moments. Decent club record and will get a good job whereever he goes.

He was a great club coach, both with Benfica and Lazio. Being England manager is a tough job to anyone. The public expectations are unrealistic and the press doesn't give you a minute's rest...

yes very lucky. he basically picks the wrong players, plays the wrong system and tries t2 do well in the world cup.

all other big teams choose a system and pick the players

we, choose the players and begin the impossible task of fitting them on the pitch.

he also has no balls to drop the best players when they're struggling fo form

He is probably the best ever Manager of the con artist. He made a fortune from having little or no coaching ability and ambition.

The man is a genius. He took England FA for twenty million and what did he deliver in return: not a lot. He made me smile.
