You can't really stay working if they don't want you too. But if they want you to work you have to stay or they can just fire you. Make sure they pay you overtime over 40 hours!

Staying over becomes an issue of getting paid overtime. In my state (Georgia), employers must pay you time and a half over 40 hours a week. Employers do not want to do this unless it is necessary because of the cost factor.

You can stay, it's called "overtime" and as long as there is proof of you staying then you get paid for it. Unless your company's payroll cannot afford to. It reallly depends on where you work.
