What were u doing during that period? Where u doing any small job or looking after family. If so state the fact and tell that period helped u to gain experience and knowledge in various fields. It is better to be frank and open while answering questions in an interview.

Say it was a gap year kind of thing where you got some experience of life, different cultures etc, or that you had to work or whatever to get money so you could continue your studies.

You could always tell the truth but in a positive way by saying you wish you'd been sensible enough not to do blah blah but you learnt such and such from it which has made you a much more capable employee

Im assuming you mean under graduate and post graduate?
Just tell them the truth unless you were in prison or something!!
Tell them you were working/gaining experience/saving money for exams etc

were studying for ur post graduate
you wanted to get settled in post college life b4 going for pg.
wanted experience for pg so you can better understand lessons learned in classes
