Hello. I pull a muscle somewhere inbetween my back and shoulder every once in a while. Maybe it is the lower trapezius. It is a high school wrestling injury that I guess never fully heals. I'm in my 30's now and I work out regularly.

How do you suggest treating it?

What do you reccomend for back pain?

It could be a lower trapezius or rhomboid injury. It may even be of the deeper tissues. The usual course of action prior to more extreme treatments is a regiment of stretching and conditioning. Also, for pain, take any kind of NSAID (Non-Steriodal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) within limits. Our patients seem to think that ibuprofen (Advil/Motrin) is the winner and also leads to less stomach irritation. Stay within your limits of pain and keep it stretched. Massaging the area may also help. If it swells and hurts, go with ice and rest.

This has happened to me before from sleeping on my side, it made my upper body out of place and in sort of need of an adjustment. You can do a couple of things. Sit on a chair with a low back and then stretch backwards over the chair to try to sort of "crack" it into place. Or you can try stretching movies by using your arm on a wall then stretching the shoulder blade/chest in the opposite direction. Sometimes you hear a "pop" and it pops back into place or you keep stretching it and it'll eventually feel better. A chiropractor may not be a bad thing. I love them, went on and off since I was a kid. Other issues you can look into as well: If you think it's an actual muscle pull (which would hurt like none other) then see a doctor for an MRI or something to look at tears and while you're there make sure they rule out any heart problems. As far as creams: I would skip that b/c that just covers up the problem and too much cream (daily use) can cause death (it happened to a teenager recently). If you go the cream route, I'd say natural Arnica oil or cream is good.

In addition to the other recommendations here, you might try Emergen-C with MSM. It's a powder that has a highly effective delivery system for MSM, which is very good for chronic musculoskeletal problems. I have a preventive medicine doctor friend that recommends it for problems like yours. You may need to take two or three doses a day until you see some relief, then you could back off to one dose a day for maintenance.

Be sure you get the Emergen-C with MSM. Emergen-C has other versions without the MSM. You can find it most good health food stores. If you don't see it, ask. They can usually special order it at no additional cost. Or just do an online search and order it that way.
