As most programmes on TV nowadays are all decided on telephone voting, do you think we should vote on who gets into the England squad in future?

We all think we know best as to who should play and who should be dumped.

I don't think that would work. We'd get to a stage where people would try to swing votes in favour of their favourite players. Sven might not have been the greatest manager but at least he had some footballing knowledge. i'd much rather have the England squad named by a professional than by blokey on the street. however, an interesting spin on this could be to allow for one place to open up to a public vote! I think we'd have had an extra striker for the world cup if this was the case.

How often do we have public votes on issues in the UK? They are extremely rare. To have a public vote on a minority rights issue is against the principles of a representative democracy. There are good reasons that we have a representative democracy. 1) Practical reasons - we can't expect everyone to have the time, motivation, intellect etc to participate all the time. 2) The masses can be extreme and it can lead to a tyranny of the majority. Look no further than America and gay marriage. Representative democracy has a tempering effect on the masses. 3) Having a legislature debate the issue, come to consensus and/or amend proposals is more democratic than a referendum that usually only offers limited choices. Depending on how you frame the choices the outcome could be markedly different. The reality is that gay marriage is highly likely to be legal in every jurisdiction in the UK within 2-3 years. Not a single major party leader opposes it. Even the leader of the BNP mildly supports it. With Labour whipping and supporting it, it is highly unlikely that it will not pass. In Scotland, a majority of MSPs have already pledged support for it. In Northern Ireland it seems likely to pass too. We already have civil unions. Once you have that, gay marriage will be soon follow. Compared to the US we are dealing with this much better. We'll get over it instead of having the issue dominate politics and dividing society.

Am not to sure on the public vote as far as picking the squad in concerned, could you imagine some woman sitting there in the middle of the menapouse chosing David Beckham because he looks good.

As far the managerial vote, i think it should be like a general election style process, where everything genuine football fan gets a chance to vote.

Anyone who bothers, lol, to read my views on football will tell you i am so anti FA, they just do decisions based on sponsorships.

I dont think it should be the public to vote. it will become a one club team as all utd supporters will vote for utd players same as chelsea or arsenal and liverpool fans.
england just need a neutral manager who accept defeat when they lose or will look forward to improving.
they just dont get the right man for the job.

one decent manager can turn around england cos its better than
any team in the world but it doesnt have the manager to show its worth in world football.
there is noway u have a squad with gerrard, lampard, rooney and ferdinand and you lose. france got to the finals with players who play in england andare now world class. but when you look at england. there is one missing team player!!!!! always the MANAGER.
come on england rise to the top

No. What do fans really know about football? Fans sit in their armchairs with their beer cans in hand, and they take in soundbites. They think they know football because they have read in the paper, or seen on Sky Sports and such like, that Beckham doesn't tackle, or Gerrard and Lampard can't play in the same team, or Rooney is a hothead. They don't experience football or players on a day-to-day basis.

That's why a manager is put in charge of the team. Managers know football inside out. They know what the players do because they were players themselves. They know much more about tactics, manoeuvres etc because they immerse themselves in these kinds of things. They know the ins and outs of a player's game, because they are coaching them day in, day out. Fans don't do any of this.

Fans sit in the pub and moan. They say they could do a better job than the coach, but they don't eat, sleep and breathe football like the best managers do.

NO.It's up to the manager.
England just need a decent manager. I can't really see McClaren doing any better to be honest most times when assistants take over it doesn't seem to work out.

Don't be silly, the fans of the better supported clubs would all vote for their own players, and the non-english people living here would conspire to all vote for a crap player in the hope he'd get in and scupper our chances. Hmmm, makes you wonder about Theo....................
