A need is something without which you will die: food, water, shelter.

A desire is something you would like to have. It can be a luxury, or it can be a specific response to a need.

I need food. I desire pizza.

I need shelter. I desire a flat on the upper east side.

Unfortunately, many people consider their desires needs.

Needing something means that you have to have it to suffice . Desiring means you really can live with out it , but if you had it it would be a luxury . Like , I really need to get my teeth fixed ,, instead of ,, I really want to have my teeth whitened ... See the difference , one is a necessity the other a luxury
