It's kind of hard to become street-wise by only half measures. You have to go out and dive into the underside of society that you've missed, and in doing so, it's almost unavoidable that you'll jepordize the things you've worked for.

just to reaffirm and add to what salihe66 said, you might consider the real underside of society and leave the US, where our "streetwise" folks are relatively pampered.
A place like Cambodea is still in the process of sorting itself out, as is Indonesia. Cambodea, if your American, is probably less risky since your face value as a hostage is as salient.
salihe66 points out the cost to you of this vision quest. If I may, there are some benefits, particularly if you weigh the possibilities of your choice location developing some time in the future. Your time spent there when things were unorganized will offer you benefits should the country get its act together. The connections/friends you make will keep you in the category of "friend when everything sucked" which proves useful later. Last but not least, you can actually be an asset rather than just some dope posturing for a position in a local thuggary, like again what many gangs here in the US are based on.
If you have, or on the way to having a college degree, this is a good experience and not uncommon for folks under thirty. Some do the Peace Corp thing, but most just get on a plane and look for a position when they get there.
I did time in Vietnam and Cambodea in the 90's with the same intention as you just mentioned and have benefitted in about every way you can think of, not just economic.
Good luck and good idea.

Go out and join more clubs and organizations. And although I've given this advice lots of times, it works nonetheless. You should join different groups that you find interest in so that you could meet new people who could introduce new things into your life...
