No -- you would NOT get the effect you seek.

When you finger a note, you generally finger above the fret. This gives you leverage to pin the string down tightly at a single point (where it crosses the fret).

If you file off the frets you will end up pinning down the string over an area rather than at a point and won't produce any notes correctly if you can get them to ring at all. You are likely to end up sounding like you a muting all the strings of a dramatically out-of-tune instrument.

May I suugest that you do that on a REALLY Cheap guitaur so that you can better understand what and why you are doing. The answer is yes, then again, Fretless Guitaurs can be ordered. But I would try it on a really cheapo, almost toy one afore I ruined a nice guitaur with no knowledge of the outcome and desired results.

Wouldn't it screw your guitar? I'm no expert here, but surely that's not the only difference between a normal guitar and a fretless? Correct me if I'm wrong - there's every chance I am!

i dont think i would risk it. more than likely it would ruin your guitar. also i know that fretless instruments are extremely difficult to play.

if there are no frets, it's not a guitar, the frets are what make it sound different and have different notes.

You know what they are there for? You know how to play? Then you know what happens when you remove the rise. Your sound goes whack. But maybe you like the new sound.

Why not just remove them if you want to eliminate them?
OK, no, how else would you be able to strike notes, chords, and play?
