YES! They had:

i) great goalkeeper and defenders. The team fails the match against USA and Australia, but goalie and defenders always were at their top performance.
ii) great coach. A Federal (National) team can't have the same efficiency of a club team. Club players stays together 250 days out a year, playing, training, living in the same city, sharing hobbies as disco or golf, having holidays... In a fed team the days could be 30-40 or 70-90 if a great tournament as a WC happens. In a fed team a coach hasn't enough time to try tactics, movement, schemes. Having a key role player injured is a trouble in a club, a catastrophe in a fed team.
Coach Lippi played preliminaries with his favorite 4-3-1-2. When Totti was injured by a broken leg on February, he was replaced by Del Piero. Italy won great friendly match (3-1 Holland, 4-1 Germany) showing an unusual attacking attitude according to Lippi's game behavior. In WC, Totti wasn't fully recovered and Del Piero was in lack of fitness. Zambrotta, Gattuso, Camoranesi had lesser injuries. De Rossi was banned for 4 match. Nesta, rated as one of the best world defender, was injured since AUS match. After Ghana and USA match, Lippi had to switch to a more defensive 4-4-1-1, better covering Totti slow movements. In the final, France was winning by penalty at early 7' and no one lose his head.

Of course, a WC winner ALWAYS needs luck and circumstances. Italy had an unfair penalty against AUS, a lesser competitive quarter-final, and won in the final on penalties. But this always happens!!! France won Italy on penalties in '98. Brazil won '94 final at penalties too... Luck and circumstances aren't so hot to diminish how worthy Italians were.

Whoever SCORES more than the OTHER team WINS! It's not Italy's FAULT that TREZEGUET.. though thought as being a BIG PLAYER, missed his penalty shot, making France lose. Come on, we've waited 24 years for this!! Deserve it? YEAH

and for the ppl saying that italy didn't deserve it, was because they want stupid france to win. Which, the ref, I might add, was too giving when Henry (WORST FAKER THAN TOTTI) fell in the penalty box, and gave the frenchmans the kick, and zidane almost missed it, and then passed the line. I think at 6 minutes into the game.. the ref was generous. SOO.. HE KNEW HE MADE A MISTAKE WITH THE FIRST PENALTY, so when the REAL one came along.. he knew he made a mistake, why make another?

I still think the frenchman fans are sore losers. OKAY GET OVER IT ITALIA WON, FRENCHMANS LOST! Wait to see what France gets in 2008 (Euro) & the WC in 2010. THE 2006 WC IS OVEERR!!

Of course she deserves it.
They've earned it as clear as day.

Think about it:
They only allowed 2 goals throughout the tournament, and one of those was an own goal (Zaccardo, when Italy played US team)
Although their football wasn't pretty at times, I believe it was their sheer determination, and the fact that they worked together AS A TEAM, that made them go on to win the cup.
I can't get my head around people who keep banging on about 'did they deserve it...?'

Even though the win was through penalty kicks, Italy got all 5, so you can't get any better than that. Italy really, really wanted the cup, and got it, fair and square.

You think other teams don't play dirty. I've seen loads of people on these boards write in to say how 'dirty' Italians play.

Come off it - it's the nature of the game.
I've watched this final more than a few times, and Zidane took quiete a few dives himself, and I saw the referee wave him on to get up and get on with it. No player is immune to that sort of behaviour.

Football isn't only about how pretty you control the ball - it has a lot to do with mental strenght as well. With that, (and yes, a little bit of luck), you can conquer it, and that's exactly what Italy did.

1 they played their games in perfect way
2 they had already won the cup world 3 times
3 they are clever stable & handsome
4 they were able to get advantage of others foolishness.

Brazil,Mexico,Portugal and Spain all had way better teams but could not beat them on the comedian side.
That's why we had such a boring final with Italy on the defensive 3/4 of the game waiting for something special to happen.Nothing happened so they started the soap opera-and won!
